The Justice Box
By Michael Robert David
Direction by Matt Popham
How many times will a man walk in the footsteps of his
family's predecessors?
October 23rd through
November 14th, 2006
In this dark
comedy, a young man, Jules, is challenged by a government man to carry the
prized family legacy, the blade of a guillotine - Lady Justice, the secret
Executioner's weapon of choice. Jules is given three tasks by the government
before he can refuse to continue the "terrible" task of putting to death enemies
of the state, as his family has done for the last 150 years. Will he stand firm
to his beliefs or be swayed by the sweet soothing sounds of Lady Justice and her
swift resolutions to a complicated world?
This play deals with
mature issues and has some strong language and sexually imagery.
Featuring:
Lauren
Hathaway, Jerry Hoffman, Joseph Garcia, Lilo Grunwald, Rasool Jahan, Nikitas
Manikatos, and Kyle Moore.
Message from Artistic Director John Lant:
"I'm excited that this
author, Michael Robert David, is associated with Write Act Repertory. I wanted
the rep season to start with productions that came out of the gates like a shot.
Uncle Vampire and The Justice Box are two completely different plays that are a
nice complement of bringing immediate theatre to the Los Angeles Community. Mr.
Davis has a prolific history of plays that are socially poignant across time.
This play was written 36 years ago, and I was amazed at the relevance of his
attitudes toward social change and politics versus what the government is
supposed to represent. We
let the audience decide after the play whether they agreed with the conclusion."
