NOHO LA  Jan. 6-19, 2004

"Party Dresses for Girls and Boys is a three scene crowd-pleaser...Darin Anthony creates a believable pace and Jonathan Ginsberg and John Patrick Patti play off each other convincingly..."

John Patrick Patti, John Jeffrey Soroka

"Falfurious ...is a sweet allegory of life...Gentle direction from Bennett Cohon sets the tone for the amicable confrontation between stalwarts Earl Carroll and Patrick Burleigh..."

BACKSTAGE WEST  Dec. 18, 2003

"Swaye's writing [in Falfurious] is ... assured in this bittersweet story of an old apple seller (Earl Carroll) who takes advantage of a chance meeting with a stranger (Patrick Burleigh)...The twist here is genuinely surprising and brought a startled sigh from the audience. Although set in the present time, Falfurious has the feel of a Depression era yarn and of something oddly familiar as well, as if it were a family legend told from generation to generation and warmly polished with each telling. Carroll offers an affecting performance, and Burleigh is winning as a stranger who takes the time to listen to his new friend without judging his actions..."

Mileage is a journey into the colorful lives of simple characters who discover, that a search for meaning has an unexpected destination … change. As part of Write act’s New Works Series,  Mileage is a cycle of three once-act plays by Los Angeles playwright Matthew I. Swaye: The Broach directed by Anastasia King, Party Dresses for Boys and Girls directed by Darin Anthony,  and Falfurious directed by Bennett Cohon.

Continuing with Write Act’s mission of producing original plays for the Los Angeles community, producing artistic director John Lant, saw a gem in these stories; depicting characters in varied stages of life, who are not involved in grand endeavors in the eyes of history, but their stagnancy, inner quests and circumstances are universal. Their sense of hope is evident. Their regrets, too. Even their fears.
